Mark Watney (Matt Damon), one of the first astronauts to step foot on Mars, ends up unconscious and blown away from the team during a deadly storm. Presumed dead, the team evacuates leaving Mark behind and heads back to Earth. Not too long after, Mark wakes up and realizes he is alone. With not much to survive off of, Mark must now find a way to feed himself and make contact with Earth or the crew. He must set up a shelter quickly before he runs out of oxygen. More importantly, will he manage to contact someone to let them know he has survived his injuries.

Though not for the same reason, the three of them have one common goal, to kill Tom Chaney.
