Game Of Thrones Filming Locations
Everyone knows Game Of Thrones! It seems to be the only show that people talk about nowadays. However, not everyone knows where the producers filmed this incredibly stunning show.
So, where is Game Of Thrones filmed!? Well, it shouldn’t come as a surprise when we say that the filmmakers have used multiple destinations for the film’s shooting. Producers used Northern Ireland, Canada, Croatia, Iceland, Malta, Morocco, Scotland, Spain, and the United States.
If you keep reading, we dive deeper into some of the most essential locations used for filming. Some of the places listed above did not actually play a significant role in the filming. So, we will only be covering the most important locations of those above.
Locations Used In Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland did play a significant role throughout the filming of Game Of Thrones. Producers shot King’s Road, one of the most recognized locations in the show, in Northern Ireland. The real name of this beautiful avenue of beech trees is Dark Hedges.
For filming the volcanic island of Dragon Stone, producers used Downhill Beach, one of the longest beaches in Northern Ireland.
Other locations used in Northern Ireland include Binevenagh Mountain, Murlough Bay, and Fair Head.
Locations Used In Croatia
Filmmakers also used Croatia for some of the locations you see in Game Of Thrones. Kings Landing is located in Croatia! The location’s actual name is Dubrovnik. More specifically, producers used Old Town in Dubrovnik for the Kings Landing scenes. Dubrovnik Old Town is known to be one of the most well preserved medieval towns in the world.
Producers used Sibenik, a medieval city on the Adriatic coast, for the scenes where Arya makes the journey to train the faceless man.
One last location used in Croatia is the beautiful Trsteno, a small seaside village located north of Dubrovnik.
Locations Used In Iceland
Another beautiful location picked by producers is Iceland!
Starting off, we have Snæfellsjökull, Höfðabrekkuheiði, and Svínafellsjökull which producers used for Fist of the First Men.
Next, we have Thingvellir National Park, in which producers filmed the pass to the impregnable Eyrie where you witness the show’s characters coming upon the Bloody Gate. More filming took place here for Arya and The Hound’s long journey.
Producers shot Rayder’s Wildlings camp, in season 3, at Dimmuborgir. And that sums up all the known locations that producers used in Iceland!
Locations Used In Malta
Now we have arrived in Malta, another absolutely stunning location used in the filming of the series.
Producers used the beautiful and iconic Azure Window, a natural limestone arch, for Daenerys and Drogo’s wedding!
The small village of Manikata was used for the scenes of the village of the Lhazareen.
For Drogo’s funeral and the absolutely epic scene where Daenerys walks out of a blazing fire, producers used Mtahleb Valley.
A few other locations used in Malta include Verdala Palace, Church of St Dominic & The Blessed Virgin, Pjazza Mesquita, San Anton Palace, Fort Ricasoli, and Fort St. Angelo.
One final location, where producers filmed the beheading of Eddard Stark, is Fort Manoel.
Locations Used In Scotland
For the Winterfell scenes, producers used the majestic Doune Castle. Other than that, producers didn’t do much filming in Scotland!
Locations Used In Spain
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that, while filming Game Of Thrones, producers chose Spain as one of the locations to shoot. The beauty of this country is just incredible!
At the beginning of season 7, filmmakers used San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, Malpartida de Cáceres, Itzurun Hondartza, and Cáceres for some of those scenes.
Some more stunning locations include the Bardenas Reales, Plaça dels Jurats, Castell de Santa Florentina, Castillo de Zafra, El parc d’artillerie, and Plaza Santa María.
That’s not all though! There are still many more locations in Spain!
Also used for filming were Anfiteatro de Italica, Reales Atarazanas, Plaza del Toros Osuna, Castillo Almodovar del Rio, Roman Bridge of Córdoba, Tabernas Desert, Sierra Alhamilla, Sorbas, The Monumental Ensemble of the Alcazaba of Almería, and La Mesa Roldan.
