Time travel now exists in the future. However, it is only accessible to the rich who can pay the costly price on the black market. A principal user of time travel is the mob who use it to there advantage. When the mob wants someone dead, they send their targets back into the past where a hired gun waits to receive and kill them. These assassins are known as Loopers. One of the best assassins in the game is Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). However, when the mob sends Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis) back for him to kill and close the loop, Joe freezes, letting himself getaway. Now Joe is in a world of trouble with the mob and may not live to see the next day.

Six years later in 1996, he ends up kidnapping Dr. Railly and uses her in his search for the 12 Monkeys. The group which released the virus that killed off most of the human race.
