Locations Used In New Zealand

So, now we know that producers decided to film the entire Hobbit trilogy in New Zealand. But where in New Zealand did they shoot?

Well, we’ll start with one of the most recognizable locations in the movie, Hobbiton! A really cool fact is that you can actually go and visit Hobbiton because it is a real place! Hobbiton is located near Matamata and, after building, producers decided to leave the set, up and running, to use it as a tourist attraction.

Next up, we have the Trollshaws Forest and Staddles Farm. Producers chose the Mangaotaki Rocks in Piopio to film those scenes. For the Hidden Bay, used as the entrance to the Lonely Mountain in the film, producers used Turoa, Ruapehu.

The Hobbit features one of the greatest battles ever seen on screen. For the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, producers chose Twizel as the location to film those epic scenes.

Another location which you see quite frequently in the films is Fiordland National Park. For a few of the smaller shooting sites, producers used private property around Nelson Tasman, using its beautiful scenery as a backdrop for several scenes in the movies.

For the scene where dwarves are floating down a river in barrels, producers chose to shoot at Pelorus River, Marlborough. Next up we have Laketown, which producers settled on using Lake Pukaki, Mount Cook for that.

For the last location that producers used in these films, we have the beautiful Queenstown.

That about wraps it up for the locations used in this amazing trilogy. As you can see, all these locations are absolutely stunning! And, last but not least, we hope that we have answered all your question about the filming locations of these movies!
