Where Was E.T. Filmed?

So, where exactly did Steven Spielberg decide to film this incredible movie? Well, the entire production of the film took place in California. The great state of California has so much to offer that it’s completely understandable why Spielberg would choose to film E.T. here.

Locations Used In California

Okay, so now we know that filmmakers chose to film the movie in California, but where precisely in California did they shoot it?

Well, while most of the movie’s production took place on soundstages at a studio, a few communities located on the outskirts of Los Angeles also played an important role in the movie. These communities served as the locations for Elliott’s neighborhood.

For Elliot’s backyard, producers used a house on Lonzo Drive in Tujunga. The actual address of the house is 7121 Lonzo Drive, Tujunga. Producers didn’t only use this house for the backyard scenes but also used it for the exterior scenes of Elliot’s home as well.

So, what about Elliot’s school in the movie? Well, filmmakers shot all of those scenes at Culver City High School, which is located at the corner of Elenda Street and Franklin Avenue in Culver City.

Where were the kids trick-or-treating? In the movie, producers filmed the scenes of the children and E.T. dressed in their Halloween costumes and enjoying trick-or-treating in the Porter Ranch neighborhood located in the San Fernando Valley. Film-makers also filmed all of the bicycle chase scenes here.

Oh, and how could we forget!? What about the iconic scene with the flying bikes? Well, producers shot that beautiful scene on a tree-lined section of White Oak Avenue in Granada Hills.

There was also a brief shoot at Redwood National Park in Crescent City, California for the exterior forest scenes.

While the above locations were pivotal to the film, most of the filming took place at The Culver Studios in Culver City. The film crew shot all of the interior scenes of Elliot’s house on the soundstages at the studios.
