Shawshank Redemption Filming Locations
So, where was Shawshank Redemption filmed!? We all want to know the locations used for such an iconic film! Well, unlike most movies, filmmakers did not shoot Shawshank Redemption in Hollywood, New York, or Toronto! Instead, producers shot the entire film on location in Ohio!
Locations Used In Ohio
Filmmakers shot the entirety of Shawshank Redemption in Mansfield, Ohio, and locations just outside the city! The famous Shawshank State Prison still stands, and you can actually go visit it at your own desire! The prison’s real name is the Ohio State Reformatory, which closed down in 1990, allowing producers to film there.
You can explore the Shawshank Trail which Mansfield Tourism has set up to help your journey to view all of the Shawshank filming locations! Another very cool spot you can drive by is the site where the amazing Shawshank oak tree stood. The majestic oak was located down Pleasant Valley Road in Mansfield. Unfortunately, the tree suffered severe damage from two storms and had to be removed.
If you’re also looking for the “Brewer”, the Bissman Building on North Main Street was the spot chosen for the halfway house where Brooks was sent!
For one final location – where Brooks feeds the pigeons – you can stop by Central Park, Mansfield for that experience!
We hope you enjoyed learning what locations were chosen for the filming of Shawshank Redemption.
